Trekking | Fogo
Pico Pequeno
Duration 6 hours to climb up and 45 minutes to come down.
Fogo is a hotspot volcanic island.
The best way to start the climb to Pico de Fogo is from the little town of Chã das Caldeiras. The path takes about six hours from here – after all, there is a 1000-metre difference in elevation to climb. Good footwear is absolutely necessary due to sections of the route that are steep and others that pass through fine scree (volcanic ash).
Pico do Fogo pronounced: [ˈpiku du ˈfoɡu] is the highest peak of Cape Verde, rising to 2,829 metres (9,281 ft) abovesea level. Its most recent eruptions have occurred in 1951, 1995 and 2014. It is the youngest and most active volcano in the Cabo Verde Islands.
The Volcano
Duration 3 to 4 hours to climb up and 1 to 2 hours to come down.
Fogo consists of a single volcano, so the island is nearly round and about 25 kilometers (16 mi) in diameter.
From the top it allows you to get a full view of Chã das Caldeiras and of the dimension of the successive eruptions.
Chã Das Caldeiras/Estancia Roque
Duration 3 to 4 hours.
Hiking between different lavas and plantations, many of which are endemic. The hike finishes at the Estancia Roque community, where during the 2014 eruption people lost their homes.
Admire the views of the southern area, as well as of the island of Santiago, weather permitting.
Chã das Caldeiras :(“Plain of the Calderas”) is a small community of approximately 1,000 inhabitants, situated within the crater of the volcanic Pico do Fogo on the island of Fogo.
Chã Das Caldeiras/Parque Natural de Monte Velha/Mosteiros
Duration 4 to 5 hours.
After leaving Chã das Caldeiras the hike takes you to the edge of the Monte Velha forest, to see eucalyptus, cypress and many other tree species. On the approach to Pai Antonio community the coffee and banana plantations come into view, bestowing the rich landscape on you.
Parque Natural do Fogo: on the island of Fogo, is one of nine "natural parks" in the country of Cape Verde, which may or may not be the equivalent of national parks in other countries.
Chã Das Caldeiras/Parque Natural de Monte Velha/Ribeira Filipe
Duration 5 and 7 hours.
This hike includes the western part of the forest until you arrive in Ribeira Filipe, an area allowing an excellent view of the northern part.
São Filipe - The largest city of the island, São Filipe, is located to the west of Fogo. With about 20,000 inhabitants, it’s the fourth-largest city of Cape Verde after Praia, Mindelo and Assomada. This is also the site of the island airport, which is served solely by domestic flights and only offers connections from and to the other islands as a result. On kilometres of coastline with black lava beach, the picturesque little city rises about 100 metres above the high, steep coast
