The island of Boavista is the only place in the western palaearctic where one can see this really magnificent bird. Only two old ladies are left of a group of about a dozen or so that were appearantly blown over long ago (20 years?) from the Carribean where they normally breed. Over the years there were several attempts to breed but they all failed. Now all the males are gone.
The little bird island where they are normally seen is only a short distance from the shore but it can also be reached by boat. Access is forbidden and quite impossible considering the surf conditions.
I have seen pictures of people on this rocky island but no sensible birder would cause this disturbance.
